Alice in Winterland at Lightwater Valley

Discover a fantastical new seasonal adventure at Lightwater Valley this Christmas with the enchanting Alice in Winterland.

Illuminated by the hundreds of magical lantern displays, this Christmas, Lightwater Valley will be home to Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, Humpty Dumpty and many more of those Lewis Carroll’s childhood characters we all know and love.

This immersive experience is perfect festive fun for all the family, whatever your age. From a life-size chessboard with an Alice pawn to the iconic Mad Hatter’s tea party, there’s ways to get involved throughout the experience.

Nearby Ripon is believed to have been a major influence on Lewis Caroll’s classic children’s story. The author’s father was the canon of Ripon Cathedral and carved figures resembling the Mad Hatter and Alice with which Carrol would have been familiar, have been discovered on several of its’ choir stalls so Lightwater Valley is a perfect venue to host Alice in Winterland!

Alice in Winterland will be open from 4pm with last entry at 7pm
Open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 22nd November – 15 December

Open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 20th December to 30th December.

Open fires, candle light and live music evoke all that we love about this special time of year, with the iconic 25 foot Christmas tree adorned with over 3000 baubles providing a breath-taking highlight in the Great Hall.

Inspirational design team Charlotte Lloyd Webber and Bretta Gereke have worked with the theme ‘A Christmas Masquerade’ to produce a stunning array of flamboyant displays and installations to surprise and delight visitors of all ages.

The Castle Howard “Christmas Masquerade” celebrates the House’s theatrical roots and the influence of the Italian Baroque on its magnificent architecture and interiors.
